In a child's world, the sun often wears a big smile. But unfortunately, most of the aging, cancer-causing effects of the sun are tied to the exposure a person receives before age 20.
That said, knowing the truth about the sun's rays shouldn't dim the joys of being outdoors. You can protect your baby's skin from the sun in three key ways:
- Use sunscreen regularly to block out much of the sun's harmful radiation. Be generous with SPF 15 or higher for babies over 6 months old. For younger infants, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends applying sunscreen sparingly on the hands, face, and feet if they're exposed, though covering these areas is the best approach to sun protection.
- Try to stay out of the sun, especially between the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- Cover up your baby's skin with clothes and hats.
